The feeling of uncertainty might be overwhelming but exciting. My guest today has lived through this experience. Meet Alexis Griffee. She has an amazing story to tell you today with many lessons learned from moving halfway across the country to start fresh. I'll let her tell her story, but she does have many tips for how to face fears about moving as well as how to start a homestead when your brand new. I hope you enjoy episode 10!
Take your time and learn about the new area before you jump in. New Mexico is a lot different than Florida. Even though they lived rural in Florida, their community was a little more urban than where they live now in New Mexico. Here's some ways ways the family had to adjust:
Here's what she did to overcome these adjustments:
Having a huge passion for something can work against you if you don't stop and learn first.
Alexis let herself get overwhelmed. She was involved in many things (it's easy to do when you live rural). So, she had to let herself slow down. It was hard for her to admit to herself that she was doing too much. And because of all of this, Alexis sold her beloved dairy cows.
She usually just takes a few minutes here and there to do a the easy tasks. Just completing the little tasks makes her feel accomplished.
Selling her dairy cows made her realize how much she thought about what people were thinking of her. That's when she realized that she needed to stop worrying about what others think about her. She prayed about it. Then, she refocused and reprioritized to make decisions and choices. Those choices led to the big move west.
Definitely fear:
She was too worried about these little things. There's nothing worse than living in fear and anxiety all the time. And the fear of living life. But sometimes you just have to know that you're being led and overcome those fears. You need to learn how to face fear and anxiety before you can learn how to stop living in fear. And facing fear is good for you. Face them and overcome them to grow as a person. You never know who might be waiting on you if you're too scared to make that leap. The next open door can be an exciting part of life.
She's really excited for the new farm and building a homestead house for their family. As they remodel the farm house to make it their own, she's finding that it has so much life and personality. It's old and a very loved piece of the community. So, she feels like they are restoring a piece of history to make it special for them and the community.
Again, fear! Especially with livestock. Fear about homestead startup costs, continuing to fund the homestead or something happening to the livestock is scary. Luckily, she has moved to a great community with many agricultural leaders to help and work with.
Based upon a story she tells in the episode, you have to allow beauty of God's grace to cover up the ugliness of the world. Even when we don't want to!
She always takes time for herself. Even if it's 5 minutes, that little time for yourself is golden and so important. In the morning, she likes to put on her head phones and listen to music. It helps her to escape for a little bit and get her day started right. Another suggestion is to put a puzzle together or go for a run. Do something for yourself and recharge!
Mexican Soup:
YUM! This is a recipe I need to use. Sounds delicious.
Proceed with Caution: Pinterest! It can be so awesome Tip: Set a timer for a specific amount of time and when that timer goes off - Get Off Pinterest!
Right now, it's her belt sander because she's doing a lot of renovations. She loves her belt sander because she can spend just a little bit of time and completely transform something.
She would fence it in for some fiber sheep. Alexis has a passion for weaving and spinning, so she wants to start raising fiber sheep to have her own fiber.
Just go for it! There's a lot of people out there (maybe you!) who want to start living rural, start a homestead, etc. So, take the next step and just start!
First of all, Alexis has a contest coming up to support 4-H! If you love 4-H or have kids enrolled, you might want to check it out here. Balancing life can be achieved just by doing what is the most important. And sometimes it's just changing one thing that helps you make that difference. Want to hear more? Meet Amy Dingmann. Amy is super awesome. But don't take my word for it. In episode 11, Amy is going to discuss:
Great quote: "When you find center, center moves." We're always looking for balance. Also, be honest about what you can handle in your seasons of life. Try not to overdo it.
After she and her husband bought the farm, her parents got divorced. That changed the entire outlook of their farming goals. They had to rework everything.
She learned that life is always changing. You can plan, but you can't predict the future. But you'll survive. And that's why you should appreciate the little things. It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.
There are some things with the original farm plans that she would have done differently. And those have change over time for what has worked well with their family and farm.
Thus, the importance of goals. Set your goals and stick to them. They will light up your path along the journey.
Definitely Balance! Balance is the key to life and she constantly wonders if she's spending too much time on one thing and not enough time in another area. But she realizes that if you're consistently running out of time, you should check yourself to see how you're managing your time.
For business: She wants to have more ways to educate her readers and listeners. She struggles with taking action with her ideas at times. Also, she suffers from the "imposter syndrome"...she's not giving herself enough credit with her knowledge and experiences. Listen to Elizabeth Shipstead's episode for more on overcoming this barrier of "imposter syndrome."
Amy's best advice came from one of her wedding guests: Leave three things unsaid every day. We all have things or say things that should be left unsaid. So, this would be a great habit to start each day.
Amy has learned not to rush the morning into starting work. She has found that it's really important to start the day with devotion and prayer. Basically, taking time for herself in the morning. This has became a trend among all Rural Women Inspired podcast guests.
Amy is very much a paper and pen type of person. But her favorite app is Voxer. It combines texting with talking on the phone. You can:
First of all, she would freak out! HAHA! She would sit down and make a plan with her husband for what the best way would be to use the $1000.

Challenge: Make the goal to learn to appreciate the little things in life for one day. Then, one week. Finally one month. Please let me know how your mindset changes by shooting me an email or leaving a comment below. I'd love to hear from you.
Building a legacy to pass down takes time. It takes patience, sacrifice and very hard work. And Krista Stauffer is doing it. Nothing is holding her and her family back from building their dairy farm. After 8 years of living and working on the farm, they will finally be owners! She has a great story to tell, so here are a few high lights you'll hear in this episode:
"We all struggle with trying to find balance." Living a balanced life can be difficult. Just focus on the priorities. One great example of the difficulty is from Amy Dingmann's episode: When you find center (balance), center moves! So, balance isn't really something you find ever because it is always moving.
She and her husband are a team. Also, her mother in law gave her great advice: "Never do anything on the farm that you don't want to do for the rest of your life." So, her husband milks the cows and she and the kids help out everywhere else.
Read about why team work makes or breaks farmlife.
Read how to balance farm work with kids.
Krista went through a divorce before she met her husband. It was a hard time. She had previously quit her job to stay home with her young child. So, there she was...unemployed and divorced. And during a recession, no less! Obviously a very low point in her life. But then, she got a job at the feed store! And that's where she met her husband.
That she's not defined by what others do to her. Through the experience, she always thought of her daughter first. So, she's happy about how she handled the situation because everything she did was with her child in mind.
Having children changed her life. No longer are the days where she focuses completely on herself. The kids depend on her and her days around them. But she wouldn't have it any other way.
Time is the one thing she struggles with. Not having enough time. And prioritizing. A good thing to practice is to do the most important thing each day.
Krista and her husband finally own their farm! It's scary, frustrating and exciting. Now, it's time to upgrade and change the farm that is now their's. Farm succession planning to the next generation farm family has begun for them!
Lots of lessons learn but the big one is patience. And be willing to make sacrifice. You have to change your way of thinking sometimes to make things happen. Be flexible. Finally, there's many things to learn from the older generations. Be open minded, find your mentor and be willing to let them help you.
Krista's ultimate goal is all about farm inheritance planning. Her goal is to continue to build a legacy to pass down to her kids. And there's nothing holding her back from that.
She was raised with the mindset that she can do anything she wants if she's willing to work hard for it. Also, her mother always told her that "No One Defines You." You decide the person you want to become.
She hugs and loves on her family. That personal connection with them makes her day worth it. And she has her husband and his family to thank for that.
Mostly any simple beef recipe:
Pretty much any beef and dairy recipe that is simple.
Krista is not an app person. She must be able to write with a calendar and pen.
Lysa Terkheurst (pronounced Leesa) - The Best Yes. A great book that digs into priorities. Another great book from Lysa is called Uninvited. I've recently listened to the audio version during a road trip all the way through. My way of thinking about myself was whipped into shape. It's a good one to check out as well.
She'd fence off the acreage to use for grazing heifers (young females that have not yet had a calf). The money would be used to revamp the doors and windows on the milk house. Note: The milk house does have regulations it does need to follow with the Department of Agriculture. Krista has certain rules she would have to follow before making those design decisions.

Bloom in your family, community and life by mastering the art of communication! Val Plagge is the special guest today. She's discussing a topic that many Ruralites struggle with - Including me! So, listen to her episode and find inspiration! And, check out all the amazing nuggets of inspiration Val has to offer in the show notes while you listen to her episode.
Surprisingly, Val still finds time to volunteer in her rural community:
So, Val wears a lot of different hats! Next, let's hear some advice from Val.
"Bloom Where You Are Planted." She wants to help make where she lives a better place, both farm and her community.
When Val was in college, her parents got divorced after 25 years of marriage. It was very hard on her. And she took partial blame on herself. She attended therapy sessions to help her and her family get through the struggle.
Her lightbulb moments came in 1st grade! She learned that even in rural Iowa, not everyone knows how food is grown on the farm.
Biggest struggle is keeping the house picked up with four kids. The kids often distract her from what needs to be done around the house.
Val is most excited about those little moments with her kids and seeing them grow up. Each of her kids have different personalities and interests.
Val's ultimate goal in life is to help youth to develop their interests. She loves working with youth and helping them develop skills and interests. But, time is the biggest thing that holds her back from those goals. The farm and family is growing so that takes up a lot of time.
Volunteering is great for meeting new people and understanding everyone in the community. Also, keeping the rural community alive. How to get involved:
Become involved and volunteer in the community. This has really shaped who she is today. Also, keeping the relationship first is very important to her.
She uses an app from Proverbs 31 Ministry called First 5. This is a devotion designed to take only the first 5 minutes of your day.
Definitely Pork Loin:
The possibilities are endless for the pulled pork. So, you can use pulled pork in: Tacos, Spaghetti Bakes, etc.
First of all, Evernote! It allows you to:
Also, Google Calendars to keep everyone in the family on schedule.
One physical tool is the dry erase board in the kitchen with the family prayer list. It's a way to include the kids into daily prayers.
The Antelope in the Living Room by Melanie Shankle. Also, she wrote: Sparkly Green Earings and Nobody's Cuter than You. Those two books are also very good.
For sure, she will use the money to build a large tree house for the kids! And the extra 10 acres added on and planted to a crop.
Remember always to put family and time first before anything else and you'll bloom in your family, community and life.

Get fit in mindset and body with Anna Woods! Anna stresses the important in becoming fit in your mind first and foremost. Her passion is helping rural women to put themselves first and help them to realize that they are amazing. Anna is awesome and so inspiring. I can honestly tell you that after chatting with her, my mindset did a complete 180. But, don't just take my word for it. Listen to her episode and find inspiration! Check out all the amazing nuggets of inspiration Anna has to offer in the show notes while you listen to her episode.
She enjoys working with people of all ages, especially adults with special needs and age. She wants people to understand that fitness is:
So, Anna created the SheStrength program and has a lot to offer women who want to get fit in mindset and body.
The concept of "I am enough." What you do each day is enough.
So, the concept of "I am enough" came out of this low point in Anna's journey. She and her husband was trying unsuccessfully to have their second child. Because of this low point, Anna was living a very bitter and angry life. She was frustrated that she didn't have control over this situation. But then, in the middle of trying to adopt their son, Anna became pregnant!
And if Anna could do it over again, she would be a lot less bitter and a lot more understanding.
After her second baby was born, she had trouble dropping the baby weight. She became obsessed with losing the weight. Furthermore, she became a slave to the scale. And she was hating the person she was becoming and knew that something had to change. So, she learned the concept of having one goal and achieving it. Maybe just focus on one pull up. Or three pushups. This is the mindset shift. Because, fitness is defined by YOUR goals - Not anyone else's.
Mostly, she's excited for the future her SheStrength program. Also, the opportunity to make an impact on her daughters (and other peoples' daughters!)
First of all, slowing down and enjoying the ride. Then, being patient and waiting for the right timing of things.
Just being enough. Do what you can and understand that it's enough. And you have to learn what your boundaries are and what you can do.
First of all, taking time in the morning for herself. It can be just a few minutes:
Hence, she makes her mindset right first and then starts the day.
Pink Himalayan Salt Zuccini Favorite Pizza Toppings
Probably an app called Wonderlist
Probably her barn with her home gym. Kids have a place for an outlet:
It's a nice change of scenery for them.
Probably the book 5 Habits of a Woman Who Doesn't Quit - What we give ourselves permission to do...either quit or keep on pushing.
Anna would love to build a fitness training facility that is handicap accessible for people with disabilities to feel comfortable in and to get fit in mindset and body. Also, she would offer her SheStrength program for all women looking for an outlet from their day. And to get fit in mindset and body, too.
Start telling yourself that you're enough. Figure out what your goals are. Furthermore, establish boundaries for yourself around those goals in preparation to get fit in mindset and body. Then, start following through! And give yourself permission to say no.
First of all, Facebook: Anna Woods And the beautiful SheStrength Website Then, SnapChat: home.gym Email: anna@shestrength.com And watch for the APP coming soon! An awesome way to get fit in mindset and body. Finally, catch all the past episodes of Rural Women Inspired!

Travel to all 50 States by following the journey of Natalina Sents. Natalina is telling the story of farmers state by state all year long through the Why I Farm Road Trip. Furthermore, she was a joy to talk to and I hope you all enjoy learning about her journey as much as I do.
So, Natalina is a country girl from Iowa who loves to:
Her blog is the Roots Journey, where she shares her travels to rural communities and farms. Currently, she's on a year long 50-State Why I Farm Road Trip where she's sharing the story of farmers through interviews and photography. So, she gets to travel to all 50 states to meet with amazing farmers. And these stories can be found on the Why I farm Blog and social media pages as well as Natalina's blog The Roots Journey.
Always wake up with fresh mindset and be ready to take on today's challenges. Put yesterday's struggles behind you. And be thankful for what you have in this rural lifestyle!
Back in high school, her high school best friend began to struggle with drugs. Seeing him make poor choices was very difficult. She had to make the choice to not follow his path but to support him. This experience made her feel more independent in the way she began to make decisions and choices. Which especially comes in handy with this opportunity to travel to all 50 states.
It's certainly shaped who she has become. She kept a lot of the struggle to herself at the time. She doesn't think this is a good idea. Then, graduation happened and they went their separate ways. Consequently, looking back she's grateful for the opportunity to go to college.
In college at Iowa State, Beck's Hybrids visited her classroom and introduced the art of telling the farmer's stories. She knew right away she wanted to help with this cause. So, the videos she saw that day was her aha moment for the next step in her path.
First of all, the struggle on the road trip:
And, the struggle in her personal life:
These featured stories will be available online for many years to come.
There's not enough hours in the day! And not enough caffeine.
"A Man is not a Failure until he begins to Blame Someone Else. So, take control and responsibility for your own actions.
She receives a bible verse texted to her each morning to start her day.
While traveling, it's local cuisine. And she turns to caffeine In the south, she loves the Waffle House Pecan Waffles and a hash brown. Perk: The Waffle Houses are open all day and night. As a result, she can have this meal whenever she wants while she can find a Waffle House!
Probably Air B&B. Rented space in homes, shops, etc. Here is the link for you to check out Air B&B on a discount.
Her camera is her best tool. She uses the Canon Rebel T2i. And I use the Canon Rebel T5i. Any of the Canon Rebels are great cameras.
Natalina loves autobiographies. She's recently listened to Ben Franklin's autobiography.
She would start a hands-on agrotourism farm. This is where her love of ag began and she wants to give back someday.
Take the time to slow down and listen to a back ground story. Because, practicing this has made her a more thankful and intentional person.

Online college student to online entrepreneur could be the next step for you. Why not go back to school? Why not start an online business? Episode four will be featuring Ashleigh Hett. She knows all about that big transition...at least the beginning steps and hard work it takes to get to that point! For years, Ashleigh has blogged at Prairie Gal Cookin'. Hence, with her experiences in the online and blogging world, she's ready to help others by creating her own virtual assistant business. So, keep listening because you don't want to miss a piece of this episode!
So, Ashleigh is a Kansas country girl. She lives on a farm with her parents and younger siblings and her animals:
And she always knew she wanted live in the country and have lots of animals. She realized she wanted to become a blogger after reading Ree Drummond's first cook book. Her blog, Prairie Gal Cookin',
Finally, Ashleigh is also a full time online college student while making time for herself and others as well.
So, if you're torn and trying to decide if you want more Education: "Sit down and take inventory of what you love to do and what you want to do in the future. Education just might be a part of it." Maybe even becoming an online college student!
When she got out of high school, she had two options:
But, she didn't know what she wanted to do and she felt helpless. Hence, a lot of prayer went into this decision.
Again, Ashleigh prayed hard through this decision. She turned it all over to HIM to help her make the decision to become an online college student. She found her online program through Lumerit and never looked back.
Definitely the moment of prayer and the moment that she realized how she wanted to take her next step with her education and become an online college student.
Ashleigh biggest struggle is that she is a procrastinator! And this is why she's starting to plan her days and weeks better by using her planner.
Probably Fear:
If the business is successful, what will she do after that? She has to have something that's just out of reach to strive for.
"What is I fall?" "Oh, but my darling, what if you fly?" Because, if we don't seize the day and take on the challenge, what opportunities would be missed?
Ashleigh has a weekly habit: Planning! So, she maps out her entire week on Sunday evenings. Also, devotions in the morning must happen for Ashleigh.
Probably yummy chicken alfredo. Here's the recipe on Prairie Gal Cookin'.
The heart of the farm planner! It's amazing because it was created and designed with the rural farm woman in mind. It includes:
Ashleigh has reviewed this planner. Here's another episode of Rural Women Inspired that also mentioned a review for the Heart of the Farm Planner.
First of all, the convection bake oven is awesome for baking 9 perfect loaves of bread or a triple batch of cookies. Also, the Alta Fitbit keeps Ashleigh on track to staying active. It talks back to her! Much more high tech and cool than my Fitbit Charge HR!
First of all, The original Farm Journal Country Cookbook Then, Ree Drummond's First Cookbook Finally, Milk Cow Kitchen - A Farm to Table Cow Guidebook!
First of all, she would build a chicken coop for Rhode Island Red chicks. Then, she'd buy some goats. Then, she would have fresh milk and eggs for cooking!
Never give up or discount any life experiences. Because everything you go through is an important part of your future.

Build your rural sisterhood virtually! Episode three will be featuring Elizabeth Shipstead. And she knows all about how to build your rural sisterhood online. You see, Elizabeth is the mastermind behind www.theruralsisterhood.com and the Rural Sister Community Facebook Group. And both of these pages are places for rural women to join and find a supportive community.
Elizabeth is from Northeastern Montana where she farms with her husband and two little daughters. They raise peas, wheat, canola and cattle.
From Michael Hyatt: "Balance in life is similar to physical balance, such as standing on one foot. If you only stand on one foot, that one foot is constantly adjusting." Another good piece of advice: "With God, nothing is impossible."
She didn't grow up on a farm so she learned everything she now knows since meeting her husband. She was thrown head first into farming. And that first year was very tough:
And she let stress really dictate reactions. Lots of hardships to overcome and learn from.
So, she overcame that low point by writing on her blog about her stresses and building her community of supportive sisters. Readers followed her and commented on her posts. Hence, this was the beginning of building her online community. Of course, she also built friendships in her own Montana community. Furthermore, God helped her overcome the low points. And from there, her rural sisterhood community was born.
Probably realizing the need to create community. Elizabeth had been a part of other Facebook groups and wanted to start her own. She wanted her group to be full of whole hearted rural ladies - free of heated debates and full of support. She and other original group members created guidelines to follow to make the group stay true to it's goals. It's a great place to connect!
Probably balance! Juggling a farm, family, home and business is difficult. So, she has created some boundaries for staying present with her family:
Feeling qualified to writing a devotional. In addition, a quote from Christine Cain: "God doesn't call the qualified. He qualifies the called." So, this inspired her because she gained the confidence that God will qualify her and equip her to write a wonderful devotional for her rural sisters.
Probably to always go back to what is the most important. To Elizabeth, it's her faith. So, she always checks in with God to do what's important. Also, learning from your mistakes is huge. Because lessons are so important to learn and overcome to move forward.
Getting up early was really hard to do at first. It was a big adjustment. But having that time to herself really made a difference. By getting up early, Elizabeth can have some precious time to herself:
So, it's all about finding that time for yourself that works for you. Make it happen to build your rural sisterhood and support yourself!
Trello = Evernote + Pinterest. With Trello, you can create boards and keep track of things like:
Take this Trello Training to learn all about it.
Her planners are her favorite tool. She has used several to keep her organized and on track. ** Giveaway for Ruralites: Get Elizabeth's planner resource guide for FREE. Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist. It's all about celebrating the extraordinary nature of everyday life.
Cows are our focus right now. Therefore, she would put the money towards buying new cows. And the 10 acres could also be fenced and grazed or used for hay. Another place she could put the money towards is updates to her home.
Most of all, find your tribe that supports you and build your rural sisterhood. In addition, don't go it alone - Someone else is or has struggled, too.

'How to create the best version of yourself' is the topic of episode 2 of Rural Women Inspired.
Vickie Winter was born and raised around Wichita, KS. So, Kansas is her home and her roots run deep! Agriculture and Farming is something that has always been a part of her life. Her father was a farmer, she studied Animal Science at Kansas State University, worked for Cargill’s Turkey division, and she is now married to a farmer. Vickie and her farmer have been married for 10 years and they have three sweet but ornery children. She is a lover of people, animals, K-State football, living in the country, the starry night sky and last but not least God. Vickie started a Farmer’s Wives page on Facebook after quitting her corporate job to stay home with the kids. She wanted to draw knowledge from other stay at home moms, who also helped on the farm. And what better way to learn then to connect with those moms who had blazed a trail before her. The page has over 1400 members and those members are from all over the world. Another group that she recently started is the Encouragement Corner. It is a loving place for anyone whom is looking to be lifted up and to learn how to create the best version of yourself. Therefore, she can’t wait to see where this group will go and who it will encourage! Finally, Vickie strives to create the best version of herself each and every day. And I hope you enjoy her episode: "How to Create the Best Version Of Yourself. So, keep reading, click the play button above to listen or head over iTunes or Stitcher to Listen.

"Pray and Give Thanks to God that you can't control". Then "Try to find a silver lining."
Tired of living a negative life. One day at church, the preacher advised to take 20 minutes out of a day and take some time for yourself and to God. Some ways:
How to find enough time during the day to find balance. Some ways she's trying to make her day better:
The time spent at church when she realized the priest was giving her a daily task to practice, which led her to learn how to create the best version of yourself.
"I'm content with life and I feel like the best is yet to come"
So, Vickie loves the COZY app. Because it has:
Of course, Her Whistle! (What Talent! :)) Learn How to Whistle with your fingers, too!
Probably give it to my hubby!
"Do the best you can every dingle day" And "Don't be too hard on yourself"

So, why not start an interview podcasts where we can all listen to the real stories of rural women? I knew many women listen to podcasts, so it was only fitting to create a podcast for rural women. Something they can listen to and connect with a guest. Or to gain some ideas for achievement. Finally, I feel like a podcast for rural women will help to tell the story of rural life of agriculture. I know this is important. Many women are too afraid to step up and tell their story. I'm here to help them do so and to be inspired to take the next step.
First of all, I will introduce the guest of the show and she will give us a success quote. I felt like it's an awesome way to start off the episode with something super positive. Next, we transition into her failure/low points. We'll discuss the steps leading up to that point and how it changed her journey. I'll ask her what she learned from this time? Because even I know from experience - The time of failure is a time of learning opportunity. And it usually always leads into that "light bulb" moment. And then, we talk about that favorite "Light Bulb" moment. The moment that did really change everything. How did it change her day-to-day? We talk about the day-to-day in the life of a rural woman. This is what makes the episode special because every rural woman lives her day-to-day life differently. Then, we will talk about what our guest is most excited for? What does the future hold for her? Her family? How might her life be changing? What are her goals? Along with that, what are the #1 barriers holding her back from achieving those goals? These are all lessons we can learn from. Finally, I lean towards the end of the show with a series of useful nuggets of information that we can all use. Personal habits. Best book recommendation. And my very favorite - If you woke up tomorrow and acquired a plot of 10 acres + $1000, what would you do? Overtime, the questions of the show may change. But the interview flow will always be there to tell the best story possible.
To celebrate the diversity in how we live throughout the world. Through those diversities and lessons, we can unite and support each other. I'm so excited that God has blessed me to bring this show to you. I will strive to bring you quality content.
