Have you ever thought about moving away from your current life and starting a new homestead from scratch?

Starting a new homestead from scratch can be terrifying.

The feeling of uncertainty might be overwhelming but exciting. My guest today has lived through this experience.  Meet Alexis Griffee. She has an amazing story to tell you today with many lessons learned from moving halfway across the country to start fresh. I'll let her tell her story, but she does have many tips for how to face fears about moving  as well as how to start a homestead when your brand new. I hope you enjoy episode 10! Starting a new homestead from scratch

FIRST OF ALL, ABOUT ALEXIS

  • Sleep Deprived Homesteader
  • Mule Rider
  • Freelance Writer & Blogger at Muckboots & Munchkins
  • She's a member of the homesteading bloggers network I'm also a part of. Homestead Bloggers Network
  • Wife and Mom
  • Clovis, New Mexico
  • She and her family moved from Florida to New Mexico in 2016 to start their dream farm.
  • It was an interesting adjustment.

AND A PIECE OF ADVICE FROM ALEXIS

Take your time and learn about the new area before you jump in. New Mexico is a lot different than Florida. Even though they lived rural in Florida, their community was a little more urban than where they live now in New Mexico. Here's some ways ways the family had to adjust:

  • Starting a new homestead from scratch.
  • How to start a homestead with nothing in a brand new place and knowing absolutely no one in the new area.
  • Homesteading grants for funding.
  • Homesteading self sufficiency in a brand new place
  • Finally, they had to face fears about moving away and starting new.

Here's what she did to overcome these adjustments:

  • Stop and learn about her new homestead land.
  • Branched out to the locals to learn from them.
  • Work with the local Extension agents.

Having a huge passion for something can work against you if you don't stop and learn first.

NEXT, LOW POINTS THROUGH THEIR JOURNEY

Alexis let herself get overwhelmed. She was involved in many things (it's easy to do when you live rural).  So, she had to let herself slow down. It was hard for her to admit to herself that she was doing too much.  And because of all of this, Alexis sold her beloved dairy cows.

AS A RESULT, SOME LESSONS LEARNED

  • Not set herself up for failure
  • She learned to not place unrealistic expectations on herself.

HOW ALEXIS HAS LEARNED TO PRIORITIZE

She usually just takes a few minutes here and there to do a the easy tasks. Just completing the little tasks makes her feel accomplished.

THEN, ALEXIS DESCRIBES THE “AHA MOMENT”

Selling her dairy cows made her realize how much she thought about what people were thinking of her. That's when she realized that she needed to stop worrying about what others think about her.  She prayed about it. Then, she refocused and reprioritized to make decisions and choices. Those choices led to the big move west.

NEXT, WHAT IS ONE THING THAT ALEXIS STRUGGLES WITH?

Definitely fear:

  • What will family say about the big move?
  • What if they couldn't find a property?
  • Maybe the people in the new community wouldn't be nice?

She was too worried about these little things. There's nothing worse than living in fear and anxiety all the time. And the fear of living life. But sometimes you just have to know that you're being led and overcome those fears.  You need to learn how to face fear and anxiety before you can learn how to stop living in fear And facing fear is good for you. Face them and overcome them to grow as a person. You never know who might be waiting on you if you're too scared to make that leap. The next open door can be an exciting part of life.

CONSEQUENTLY, WHAT IS ALEXIS MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

She's really excited for the new farm and building a homestead house for their family. As they remodel the farm house to make it their own, she's finding that it has so much life and personality. It's old and a very loved piece of the community.  So, she feels like they are restoring a piece of history to make it special for them and the community.

SO, WHAT IS HOLDING ALEXIS BACK FROM REACHING HER GOALS?

Again, fear! Especially with livestock. Fear about homestead startup costs, continuing to fund the homestead or something happening to the livestock is scary.  Luckily, she has moved to a great community with many agricultural leaders to help and work with.    Starting a new homestead from Scratch

BEST ADVICE EVER RECEIVED

Based upon a story she tells in the episode, you have to allow beauty of God's grace to cover up the ugliness of the world. Even when we don't want to!

FURTHERMORE, HER BEST PERSONAL HABIT

She always takes time for herself. Even if it's 5 minutes, that little time for yourself is golden and so important.  In the morning, she likes to put on her head phones and listen to music. It helps her to escape for a little bit and get her day started right.  Another suggestion is to put a puzzle together or go for a run. Do something for yourself and recharge!

OF COURSE, HER FAVORITE GO-TO MEAL

Mexican Soup:

YUM! This is a recipe I need to use. Sounds delicious.

FAVORITE APP?

Proceed with Caution: Pinterest! It can be so awesome  Tip: Set a timer for a specific amount of time and when that timer goes off - Get Off Pinterest!

AND, FAVORITE PHYSICAL TOOL

Right now, it's her belt sander because she's doing a lot of renovations. She loves her belt sander because she can spend just a little bit of time and completely transform something.

THEN, BEST BOOK SHE WOULD RECOMMEND

AND, IF ALEXIS WOKE UP TOMORROW, ACQUIRED 10 ACRES AND $1000, WHAT WOULD SHE DO?

She would fence it in for some fiber sheep. Alexis has a passion for weaving and spinning, so she wants to start raising fiber sheep to have her own fiber.

IN CONCLUSION, SOME PARTING WORDS OF WISDOM

Just go for it! There's a lot of people out there (maybe you!) who want to start living rural, start a homestead, etc. So, take the next step and just start!

FINALLY, CONTACT ALEXIS

Do you struggle with trying to learn to appreciate the little things in life?

Balancing life can be achieved just by doing what is the most important. And sometimes it's just changing one thing that helps you make that difference.  Want to hear more? Meet Amy Dingmann.  Amy is super awesome. But don't take my word for it. In episode 11, Amy is going to discuss:

  • How to learn to appreciate the little things in life
  • How to find balance in your life
  • And how important it is to become an authentic person in your own life.

I hope you enjoy episode 11!  learn to appreciate the little things in life

FIRST OF ALL, ABOUT AMY

  • Clucky Dicken's Farm in Minnesota
  • Describes herself as "Ma Ingalls with a glass of red wine".
  • Lives on and manages the 5 acre Homestead
  • Law Enforcement Husband and two teenage sons
  • Gardens & Produce, chickens, quail, etc.
  • Homeschools her two boys.
  • Two web sites: A Farmish Kind of Life & The Hmmmschooling Mom
  • Author and Speaker

AND A PIECE OF ADVICE FROM AMY

Great quote: "When you find center, center moves." We're always looking for balance.  Also, be honest about what you can handle in your seasons of life. Try not to overdo it.

NEXT, LOW POINTS THROUGH HER JOURNEY

After she and her husband bought the farm, her parents got divorced. That changed the entire outlook of their farming goals. They had to rework everything.

AS A RESULT, SOME LESSONS LEARNED

She learned that life is always changing. You can plan, but you can't predict the future. But you'll survive.  And that's why you should appreciate the little things. It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.

WHAT AMY WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY

There are some things with the original farm plans that she would have done differently. And those have change over time for what has worked well with their family and farm.

THEN, AMY DESCRIBES THE “AHA MOMENT”

  • The day she walked out and realized that "this is our farm."
  • She learned that there's a difference in running a homestead to provide for yourself and a farm to provide for others.

Thus, the importance of goals. Set your goals and stick to them. They will light up your path along the journey.

NEXT, WHAT IS ONE THING THAT AMY STRUGGLES WITH?

Definitely Balance! Balance is the key to life and she constantly wonders if she's spending too much time on one thing and not enough time in another area.  But she realizes that if you're consistently running out of time, you should check yourself to see how you're managing your time.

CONSEQUENTLY, WHAT IS AMY MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

  • She's getting Turkeys
  • Experiment: Red Ranger Chickens vs. Cornish Cross Chickens for Meat
  • Lots of business plans!

SO, WHAT IS HOLDING AMY BACK FROM REACHING HER GOALS?

For business: She wants to have more ways to educate her readers and listeners. She struggles with taking action with her ideas at times.  Also, she suffers from the "imposter syndrome"...she's not giving herself enough credit with her knowledge and experiences.  Listen to Elizabeth Shipstead's episode for more on overcoming this barrier of "imposter syndrome."

BEST ADVICE EVER RECEIVED

Amy's best advice came from one of her wedding guests: Leave three things unsaid every day.  We all have things or say things that should be left unsaid. So, this would be a great habit to start each day.

FURTHERMORE, HER BEST PERSONAL HABIT

Amy has learned not to rush the morning into starting work. She has found that it's really important to start the day with devotion and prayer.  Basically, taking time for herself in the morning. This has became a trend among all Rural Women Inspired podcast guests.  learn to appreciate the little things in life

FAVORITE APP?

Amy is very much a paper and pen type of person.  But her favorite app is Voxer. It combines texting with talking on the phone. You can:

  • Talk/Text to group members
  • Leave voice messages for yourself
  • Helps keep you organized.

THEN, BEST BOOK SHE WOULD RECOMMEND

  • See You in a Hundred Years by Logan Ward. A true story about a family from the city who moved from the country to live like they would have lived 100 years ago.

AND, IF AMY WOKE UP TOMORROW, ACQUIRED 10 ACRES AND $1000, WHAT WOULD SHE DO?

First of all, she would freak out! HAHA! She would sit down and make a plan with her husband for what the best way would be to use the $1000.

IN CONCLUSION, SOME PARTING WORDS OF WISDOM

"Be Yourself. Everyone else is already taken." ~ Oscar Wilde Don't hide yourself from the world. Instead, be real and authentic.

If you're inspired with building a legacy to pass down to younger generations, episode 12 is for you!

Building a legacy to pass down takes time. It takes patience, sacrifice and very hard work.  And Krista Stauffer is doing it. Nothing is holding her and her family back from building their dairy farm. After 8 years of living and working on the farm, they will finally be owners! She has a great story to tell, so here are a few high lights you'll hear in this episode:

  • Building a legacy to pass down to generations.
  • Finding Balance in Every Day Life.
  • Community + Patience is the key to success.

I hope you enjoy episode 12!  Building a Legacy to Pass On to Generations

FIRST OF ALL, ABOUT KRISTA

  • She and her husband own Stauffer Dairy in Eastern Washington State
  • 3 Kids + One on the way
  • Blogger @ The Farmer's Wifee
  • Photographer

AND A PIECE OF ADVICE FROM KRISTA

"We all struggle with trying to find balance." Living a balanced life can be difficult. Just focus on the priorities.  One great example of the difficulty is from Amy Dingmann's episode: When you find center (balance), center moves! So, balance isn't really something you find ever because it is always moving.

HOW DOES KRISTA BALANCE FARM WORK AND KIDS?

She and her husband are a team. Also, her mother in law gave her great advice: "Never do anything on the farm that you don't want to do for the rest of your life."  So, her husband milks the cows and she and the kids help out everywhere else.

Read about why team work makes or breaks farmlife.

Read how to balance farm work with kids.

NEXT, LOW POINTS THROUGH HER JOURNEY

Krista went through a divorce before she met her husband. It was a hard time. She had previously quit her job to stay home with her young child.  So, there she was...unemployed and divorced. And during a recession, no less! Obviously a very low point in her life. But then, she got a job at the feed store! And that's where she met her husband.

AS A RESULT, SOME LESSONS LEARNED

That she's not defined by what others do to her. Through the experience, she always thought of her daughter first.  So, she's happy about how she handled the situation because everything she did was with her child in mind.

THEN, KRISTA DESCRIBES THE “AHA MOMENT”

Having children changed her life. No longer are the days where she focuses completely on herself. The kids depend on her and her days around them.  But she wouldn't have it any other way.

NEXT, WHAT IS ONE THING THAT KRISTA STRUGGLES WITH?

Time is the one thing she struggles with. Not having enough time.  And prioritizing. A good thing to practice is to do the most important thing each day.

CONSEQUENTLY, WHAT IS KRISTA MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

Krista and her husband finally own their farm! It's scary, frustrating and exciting. Now, it's time to upgrade and change the farm that is now their's.  Farm succession planning to the next generation farm family has begun for them!

ADVICE FOR STARTING YOUR OWN FARM

Lots of lessons learn but the big one is patience. And be willing to make sacrifice.  You have to change your way of thinking sometimes to make things happen. Be flexible.  Finally, there's many things to learn from the older generations. Be open minded, find your mentor and be willing to let them help you.

SO, WHAT IS HOLDING KRISTA BACK FROM REACHING HER GOALS?

Krista's ultimate goal is all about farm inheritance planning. Her goal is to continue to build a legacy to pass down to her kids. And there's nothing holding her back from that.

BEST ADVICE EVER RECEIVED

She was raised with the mindset that she can do anything she wants if she's willing to work hard for it.  Also, her mother always told her that "No One Defines You." You decide the person you want to become.

FURTHERMORE, HER BEST PERSONAL HABIT

She hugs and loves on her family. That personal connection with them makes her day worth it.  And she has her husband and his family to thank for that.  Building A Legacy to Pass On

GO-TO MEAL

Mostly any simple beef recipe:

  • Spaghetti
  • Lasagna
  • Enchiladas

Pretty much any beef and dairy recipe that is simple.

FAVORITE APP?

Krista is not an app person. She must be able to write with a calendar and pen.

THEN, BEST BOOK SHE WOULD RECOMMEND

Lysa Terkheurst (pronounced Leesa) - The Best Yes. A great book that digs into priorities.  Another great book from Lysa is called Uninvited. I've recently listened to the audio version during a road trip all the way through. My way of thinking about myself was whipped into shape. It's a good one to check out as well.

AND, IF KRISTA WOKE UP TOMORROW, ACQUIRED 10 ACRES AND $1000, WHAT WOULD SHE DO?

She'd fence off the acreage to use for grazing heifers (young females that have not yet had a calf).  The money would be used to revamp the doors and windows on the milk house.  Note: The milk house does have regulations it does need to follow with the Department of Agriculture. Krista has certain rules she would have to follow before making those design decisions.

IN CONCLUSION, SOME PARTING WORDS OF WISDOM

Get the book: The Best Yes! (See Above Links) Focus on your family and what you want in your life.

Wondering how it's possible to find balance and bloom in your family, community and life?

Bloom in your family, community and life by mastering the art of communication! Val Plagge is the special guest today. She's discussing a topic that many Ruralites struggle with - Including me!  So, listen to her episode and find inspiration! And, check out all the amazing nuggets of inspiration Val has to offer in the show notes while you listen to her episode. Bloom in your family

FIRST OF ALL, ABOUT VAL

  • From rural North Central, Iowa (Latimer).
  • She’s a wife and mom to four kids.
  • Val attended Iowa State University, where she met her husband.
  • Together, they raise corn, beans, pigs (finishing) and kids.
  • Keeps the books and helps with marketing for the farm as well as seasonal farm work.

Surprisingly, Val still finds time to volunteer in her rural community:

  • First of all, Church: Christian education, such as Christmas Program and Vacation Bible School.
  • Also, Adalente: A group to help the growing Hispanic population.
  • And Make a Wish.
  • Then, different agriculture groups, such as Farm Bureau and Corn producers
  • And, she's a Common Ground Volunteer!
  • Finally, 4-H Communications Project Leader

So, Val wears a lot of different hats! Next, let's hear some advice from Val.

AND A PIECE OF ADVICE FROM VAL

"Bloom Where You Are Planted."  She wants to help make where she lives a better place, both farm and her community.

NEXT, LOW POINTS THROUGH THE JOURNEY

When Val was in college, her parents got divorced after 25 years of marriage. It was very hard on her.  And she took partial blame on herself. She attended therapy sessions to help her and her family get through the struggle.  Bloom in your Family

LESSONS LEARNED

  • First of all, keep spouse number 1 to bloom in your family.
  • Furthermore, communicate with spouse and God and together you'll bloom in your family.
  • And she learned that there's very little informational materials for adult children and divorce.

What Would Val Had Done Differently?

  • Probably, she wouldn't have taken everything to hard or too personally. She would have taken a step back and looked at the big picture more.

THEN, VAL DESCRIBES THE “AHA MOMENT”

Her lightbulb moments came in 1st grade! She learned that even in rural Iowa, not everyone knows how food is grown on the farm.

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT VAL STRUGGLES WITH?

Biggest struggle is keeping the house picked up with four kids. The kids often distract her from what needs to be done around the house.

CONSEQUENTLY, WHAT IS VAL MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

Val is most excited about those little moments with her kids and seeing them grow up. Each of her kids have different personalities and interests.

SO, WHAT IS HOLDING VAL BACK FROM REACHING HER GOALS?

Val's ultimate goal in life is to help youth to develop their interests. She loves working with youth and helping them develop skills and interests.  But, time is the biggest thing that holds her back from those goals. The farm and family is growing so that takes up a lot of time.

Tips for Getting Involved & Volunteer

Volunteering is great for meeting new people and understanding everyone in the community. Also, keeping the rural community alive.  How to get involved:

  • First of all, go to church
  • Or, visit the local chamber of commerce
  • Finally, figure out where key leaders & influencers hang out (coffee shop, YMCA, big events, etc)

Bloom in your family

BEST ADVICE EVER RECEIVED

Become involved and volunteer in the community. This has really shaped who she is today.  Also, keeping the relationship first is very important to her.

FURTHERMORE, HER BEST PERSONAL HABIT

She uses an app from Proverbs 31 Ministry called First 5. This is a devotion designed to take only the first 5 minutes of your day.

FAVORITE GO-TO MEAL

Definitely Pork Loin:

The possibilities are endless for the pulled pork. So, you can use pulled pork in: Tacos, Spaghetti Bakes, etc.

FAVORITE APP?

First of all, Evernote! It allows you to:

  • Set reminders
  • Or Upload pictures
  • Then, Make Lists
  • And so much more.

Also, Google Calendars to keep everyone in the family on schedule.

AND, FAVORITE PHYSICAL TOOL

One physical tool is the dry erase board in the kitchen with the family prayer list. It's a way to include the kids into daily prayers.

BEST BOOK SHE WOULD RECOMMEND

The Antelope in the Living Room by Melanie Shankle.  Also, she wrote: Sparkly Green Earings and Nobody's Cuter than You. Those two books are also very good.  bloom in your family

AND, IF VAL WOKE UP TOMORROW, ACQUIRED 10 ACRES AND $1000, WHAT WOULD SHE DO?

For sure, she will use the money to build a large tree house for the kids! And the extra 10 acres added on and planted to a crop.

IN CONCLUSION, SOME PARTING WORDS OF WISDOM

Remember always to put family and time first before anything else and you'll bloom in your family, community and life.

Do you know how important it is to first get fit in mindset and body after?

Get fit in mindset and body with Anna Woods! Anna stresses the important in becoming fit in your mind first and foremost. Her passion is helping rural women to put themselves first and help them to realize that they are amazing.  Anna is awesome and so inspiring. I can honestly tell you that after chatting with her, my mindset did a complete 180. But, don't just take my word for it. Listen to her episode and find inspiration! Check out all the amazing nuggets of inspiration Anna has to offer in the show notes while you listen to her episode. get fit in mindset and body with Anna Woods

FIRST OF ALL, ABOUT ANNA

  • From rural Reno County, Kansas.
  • She's a wife and mom to three kids.
  • Anna grew up on a farm with horses. Then, went to college at Northwestern Oklahoma State.
  • And she obtained a degree in Exercise Science.

She enjoys working with people of all ages, especially adults with special needs and age. She wants people to understand that fitness is:

  • First of all Mental
  • Then, Emotional
  • Finally, Physical with the release of stress from our life.

So, Anna created the SheStrength program and has a lot to offer women who want to get fit in mindset and body.

AND A PIECE OF ADVICE FROM ANNA

The concept of "I am enough." What you do each day is enough.

  • First of all, start first thing in the morning when you wake up.
  • You have to give some time to yourself each day.
  • Finally, prioritize what you do or don't get done. And don't be afraid to say no.

NEXT, LOW POINTS THROUGH THE JOURNEY

So, the concept of "I am enough" came out of this low point in Anna's journey. She and her husband was trying unsuccessfully to have their second child.  Because of this low point, Anna was living a very bitter and angry life. She was frustrated that she didn't have control over this situation. But then, in the middle of trying to adopt their son, Anna became pregnant!

LESSONS LEARNED

  • First of all, her faith strengthened. Always know God is in control.  HE will come through.
  • Furthermore, everything happens for a reason.

And if Anna could do it over again, she would be a lot less bitter and a lot more understanding.

THEN, ANNA DESCRIBES THE “AHA MOMENT”

After her second baby was born, she had trouble dropping the baby weight. She became obsessed with losing the weight. Furthermore, she became a slave to the scale.  And she was hating the person she was becoming and knew that something had to change.  So, she learned the concept of having one goal and achieving it. Maybe just focus on one pull up. Or three pushups. This is the mindset shift. Because, fitness is defined by YOUR goals - Not anyone else's.

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT ANNA STRUGGLES WITH?

  1. First of all, watching women depending on "quick fixes" with weight loss. And comparing themselves to others.
  2. Taking time off for yourself. It's hard not to work all the time when you have a passion for something but so important.

CONSEQUENTLY, WHAT IS ANNA MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

Mostly, she's excited for the future her SheStrength program.  Also, the opportunity to make an impact on her daughters (and other peoples' daughters!)

HER RESPONSE TO "I DON'T NEED FITNESS BECAUSE I GET FIT IN MINDSET AND BODY WITH FARM WORK"

  • First of all, scientifically, your body isn't going to change if you aren't changing what it's doing each day.
  • Secondly, it's important to take time for yourself away from work.

SO, WHAT IS HOLDING ANNA BACK FROM REACHING HER GOALS?

First of all, slowing down and enjoying the ride. Then, being patient and waiting for the right timing of things.

Get Fit in Mind and Body

BEST ADVICE EVER RECEIVED

Just being enough. Do what you can and understand that it's enough.  And you have to learn what your boundaries are and what you can do.

FURTHERMORE, HER BEST PERSONAL HABIT

First of all, taking time in the morning for herself. It can be just a few minutes:

  • Maybe doing a quick workout
  • Or sitting and planning the day
  • Praying

Hence, she makes her mindset right first and then starts the day.

FAVORITE GO-TO MEAL

  • Zucchini Pizza Boats

Pink Himalayan Salt Zuccini Favorite Pizza Toppings

FAVORITE APP?

Probably an app called Wonderlist

  • Because it sends you reminders three different ways!

AND, FAVORITE PHYSICAL TOOL

Probably her barn with her home gym. Kids have a place for an outlet:

It's a nice change of scenery for them.

BEST BOOK SHE WOULD RECOMMEND

Probably the book 5 Habits of a Woman Who Doesn't Quit - What we give ourselves permission to do...either quit or keep on pushing

AND, IF ANNA WOKE UP TOMORROW, ACQUIRED 10 ACRES AND $1000, WHAT WOULD SHE DO?

Anna would love to build a fitness training facility that is handicap accessible for people with disabilities to feel comfortable in and to get fit in mindset and body.  Also, she would offer her SheStrength program for all women looking for an outlet from their day. And to get fit in mindset and body, too.

IN CONCLUSION, SOME PARTING WORDS OF WISDOM

Start telling yourself that you're enough. Figure out what your goals are. Furthermore, establish boundaries for yourself around those goals in preparation to get fit in mindset and body.  Then, start following through! And give yourself permission to say no.

FINALLY, CONTACT ANNA

First of all, Facebook: Anna Woods And the beautiful SheStrength Website Then, SnapChat: home.gym Email: anna@shestrength.com And watch for the APP coming soon! An awesome way to get fit in mindset and body.   Finally, catch all the past episodes of Rural Women Inspired!

FIRST OF ALL, ABOUT NATALINA

So, Natalina is a country girl from Iowa who loves to:

  • travel
  • thrift
  • cheer on Iowa State Cyclones

Her blog is the Roots Journey, where she shares her travels to rural communities and farms.  Currently, she's on a year long 50-State Why I Farm Road Trip where she's sharing the story of farmers through interviews and photography.  So, she gets to travel to all 50 states to meet with amazing farmers.  And these stories can be found on the Why I farm Blog and social media pages as well as Natalina's blog The Roots Journey.

AND A PIECE OF ADVICE FROM NATALINA

Always wake up with fresh mindset and be ready to take on today's challenges. Put yesterday's struggles behind you.  And be thankful for what you have in this rural lifestyle!

NEXT, LOW POINTS THROUGH THE JOURNEY

Back in high school, her high school best friend began to struggle with drugs. Seeing him make poor choices was very difficult.  She had to make the choice to not follow his path but to support him.  This experience made her feel more independent in the way she began to make decisions and choices. Which especially comes in handy with this opportunity to travel to all 50 states.

FURTHERMORE, HOW DID SHE OVERCOME THE LOW POINT

It's certainly shaped who she has become. She kept a lot of the struggle to herself at the time. She doesn't think this is a good idea.  Then, graduation happened and they went their separate ways.  Consequently, looking back she's grateful for the opportunity to go to college.

THEN, NATALINA DESCRIBES THE “AHA MOMENT”

In college at Iowa State, Beck's Hybrids visited her classroom and introduced the art of telling the farmer's stories. She knew right away she wanted to help with this cause.  So, the videos she saw that day was her aha moment for the next step in her path.

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT NATALINA STRUGGLES WITH?

First of all, the struggle on the road trip:

  • Looking for something new every day in a brand new place.
  • Learning how to find everything on your own.

And, the struggle in her personal life:

  • Prioritization everything she has to balance with this project.
  • She wants to spend more time at the farms and with the farmers. But, the post production work is calling.

CONSEQUENTLY, WHAT IS NATALINA MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

  • To meet different farmers every day.
  • She's also excited for people disconnected from farms to be reconnected with local farms nearby.

These featured stories will be available online for many years to come.

SO, WHAT IS HOLDING NATALINA BACK FROM REACHING HER GOALS?

There's not enough hours in the day!  And not enough caffeine.

BEST ADVICE SHE’S EVER RECEIVED

"A Man is not a Failure until he begins to Blame Someone Else.  So, take control and responsibility for your own actions.

FURTHERMORE, HER BEST PERSONAL HABIT

She receives a bible verse texted to her each morning to start her day.

FAVORITE GO-TO MEAL

While traveling, it's local cuisine. And she turns to caffeine In the south, she loves the Waffle House Pecan Waffles and a hash brown.  Perk: The Waffle Houses are open all day and night. As a result, she can have this meal whenever she wants while she can find a Waffle House!

FAVORITE APP?

Probably Air B&B. Rented space in homes, shops, etc. Here is the link for you to check out Air B&B on a discount.

AND, FAVORITE PHYSICAL TOOL

Her camera is her best tool. She uses the Canon Rebel T2i.  And I use the Canon Rebel T5i. Any of the Canon Rebels are great cameras.

BEST AUDIO BOOK

Natalina loves autobiographies. She's recently listened to Ben Franklin's autobiography travel to all 50 states

AND, IF NATALINA WOKE UP TOMORROW, ACQUIRED 10 ACRES AND $1000, WHAT WOULD SHE DO?

She would start a hands-on agrotourism farm. This is where her love of ag began and she wants to give back someday.

IN CONCLUSION, SOME PARTING WORDS OF WISDOM

Take the time to slow down and listen to a back ground story. Because, practicing this has made her a more thankful and intentional person.

Do you feel alone out there? Or even in your small town? Need help to build your rural sisterhood?

Build your rural sisterhood virtually! Episode three will be featuring Elizabeth Shipstead. And she knows all about how to build your rural sisterhood online.  You see, Elizabeth is the mastermind behind www.theruralsisterhood.com and the Rural Sister Community Facebook Group. And both of these pages are places for rural women to join and find a supportive community.

First of all, About Elizabeth

Elizabeth is from Northeastern Montana where she farms with her husband and two little daughters. They raise peas, wheat, canola and cattle.  Build Your Rural Sisterhood

And a Piece of Advice from Elizabeth

From Michael Hyatt: "Balance in life is similar to physical balance, such as standing on one foot. If you only stand on one foot, that one foot is constantly adjusting."  Another good piece of advice: "With God, nothing is impossible."

Next, low points through the journey

She didn't grow up on a farm so she learned everything she now knows since meeting her husband. She was thrown head first into farming. And that first year was very tough:

  • Learning to be flexible
  • Adjusting
  • Learning that everything with farming is unpredictable and can change at any moment.

And she let stress really dictate reactions. Lots of hardships to overcome and learn from.

Furthermore, how did she overcome the low point

So, she overcame that low point by writing on her blog about her stresses and building her community of supportive sisters.  Readers followed her and commented on her posts. Hence, this was the beginning of building her online community. Of course, she also built friendships in her own Montana community.  Furthermore, God helped her overcome the low points. And from there, her rural sisterhood community was born.

Then, Elizabeth describes the "Aha Moment"

Probably realizing the need to create community. Elizabeth had been a part of other Facebook groups and wanted to start her own. She wanted her group to be full of whole hearted rural ladies - free of heated debates and full of support.  She and other original group members created guidelines to follow to make the group stay true to it's goals. It's a great place to connect!

What is one thing that Elizabeth Struggles With?

Probably balance! Juggling a farm, family, home and business is difficult.  So, she has created some boundaries for staying present with her family:

  • First of all, setting up her online hours schedules
  • Then, staying true to those hours and staying offline when the family is there.
  • The Group App has been great for not getting sucked into the Facebook News Feed.
  • Finally, understanding that it's the little things that matter the most.

Consequently, what is Elizabeth most excited about?

  • First of all, continuing the success with her business and her community.
  • Then, applying everything she has learned last year and implementing it this year.
  • As a result, creating a devotional for her rural sisters.

So, what is holding Elizabeth back from reaching her goals?

Feeling qualified to writing a devotional.  In addition, a quote from Christine Cain: "God doesn't call the qualified. He qualifies the called."  So, this inspired her because she gained the confidence that God will qualify her and equip her to write a wonderful devotional for her rural sisters.

Best advice she's ever received

Probably to always go back to what is the most important. To Elizabeth, it's her faith. So, she always checks in with God to do what's important.  Also, learning from your mistakes is huge. Because lessons are so important to learn and overcome to move forward.

Furthermore, Her Best Personal Habit

Getting up early was really hard to do at first. It was a big adjustment. But having that time to herself really made a difference.  By getting up early, Elizabeth can have some precious time to herself:

  • Praying and talking with God
  • Reflecting on her day
  • Checking in with her community
  • Reading something amazing

So, it's all about finding that time for yourself that works for you. Make it happen to build your rural sisterhood and support yourself!

Best App or Resource

Trello = Evernote + Pinterest. With Trello, you can create boards and keep track of things like:

  • Bills
  • Important dates
  • Farm Records
  • Daily To-Do Lists
  • Goals
  • Can Share Boards
  • Organizing your life!

Take this Trello Training to learn all about it.

And, Favorite Physical Tool

Her planners are her favorite tool. She has used several to keep her organized and on track. ** Giveaway for Ruralites: Get Elizabeth's planner resource guide for FREE. A guide that compares and contrasts different planners. How exciting! Also, journals have been helpful to her recording those important moments that happen.

Favorite Book

Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist. It's all about celebrating the extraordinary nature of everyday life. how to build your rural sisterhood

And, If Elizabeth woke up tomorrow, acquired 10 acres and $1000, what would she do?

Cows are our focus right now. Therefore, she would put the money towards buying new cows. And the 10 acres could also be fenced and grazed or used for hay. Another place she could put the money towards is updates to her home.

In Conclusion, Some Parting Words of Wisdom

Most of all, find your tribe that supports you and build your rural sisterhood. In addition, don't go it alone - Someone else is or has struggled, too.

Have you been dreaming of a podcast for rural women that tells the true inspiring stories of rural life? Look no further!

A podcast for rural women is here. Rural Women Inspired is now available for you to subscribe and listen to the stories of a special guest every single Monday. A Podcast for Rural Women

What Is Rural Women Inspired?

Rural Women Inspired is a podcast featuring the real stories from real rural women. Everyone rural woman has a different story to tell. Lessons learned. Failures. Excitement. Every Monday, you'll hear a new episode with me interviewing an inspiring and remarkable rural woman. This first episode delves into the vision, structure and future of the Rural Women Inspired show. You'll also find out more about the host of the show: Mindy Young!

Why Rural Women Inspired?

I LOVE podcasts! I listen to them all the time wherever I am. And sadly, there were no podcasts for rural woman. None. So, why not start an interview podcasts where we can all listen to the real stories of rural women? I knew many women listen to podcasts, so it was only fitting to create a podcast for rural women. Something they can listen to and connect with a guest. Or to gain some ideas for achievement. Finally, I feel like a podcast for rural women will help to tell the story of rural life of agriculture. I know this is important. Many women are too afraid to step up and tell their story. I'm here to help them do so and to be inspired to take the next step.

Interview Flow

First of all, I will introduce the guest of the show and she will give us a success quote. I felt like it's an awesome way to start off the episode with something super positive. Next, we transition into her failure/low points. We'll discuss the steps leading up to that point and how it changed her journey. I'll ask her what she learned from this time? Because even I know from experience - The time of failure is a time of learning opportunity. And it usually always leads into that "light bulb" moment. And then, we talk about that favorite "Light Bulb" moment. The moment that did really change everything. How did it change her day-to-day? We talk about the day-to-day in the life of a rural woman. This is what makes the episode special because every rural woman lives her day-to-day life differently. Then, we will talk about what our guest is most excited for? What does the future hold for her? Her family? How might her life be changing? What are her goals? Along with that, what are the #1 barriers holding her back from achieving those goals? These are all lessons we can learn from. Finally, I lean towards the end of the show with a series of useful nuggets of information that we can all use. Personal habits. Best book recommendation. And my very favorite - If you woke up tomorrow and acquired a plot of 10 acres + $1000, what would you do? Overtime, the questions of the show may change. But the interview flow will always be there to tell the best story possible.

My Goal for a Podcast for Rural Women

To celebrate the diversity in how we live throughout the world. Through those diversities and lessons, we can unite and support each other. I'm so excited that God has blessed me to bring this show to you. I will strive to bring you quality content.
